FireWork Safety!

The flavor profile of a great wine is complex, but learning about it shouldn’t have to be. Here’s how I made the world of wine accessible, inviting, and fun–so that first-timers can visit the tasting room with confidence.

Project Information

Audience: Wine enthusiasts, hospitality professionals, and first-time wine tasters

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual and Sound Design, Storyboarding

The Challenge

Wine enthusiasts often find the world of wine complex and intimidating, especially when it comes to understanding flavor profiles, selecting appropriate pairings, and navigating an ever-increasing number of exotic varietals. This complexity can deter newcomers from fully enjoying wine experiences and hinder their confidence in making informed choices.

The Solution

To address this challenge, I developed “Get WineWise,” an interactive eLearning course designed to make learning about wine approachable and enjoyable for beginners. The course incorporates visually appealing and engaging activities, such as interactive games and tools, to teach essential wine concepts. Learners explore flavor profiles, discover wine and food pairings, and navigate tasting room etiquette through hands-on, interactive experiences.

The course uses dynamic activities to keep learners engaged—such as drag-and-drop exercises, sliders to compare wine characteristics, and an interactive map introducing key wine regions around the world. These elements ensure that learners build their knowledge while having fun along the way, leaving them excited and confident about applying what they’ve learned on their next visit to a vineyard or wine bar.

Development

Adhering to the ADDIE model, I began with a comprehensive needs analysis to identify the key challenges and gaps in knowledge for wine beginners. Collaborating with SMEs in the wine industry, I created a detailed storyboard that mapped out the course’s dynamic, interactive activities and engaging flow.

The visual design was intentionally vibrant and immersive, using stunning vineyard photography and elegant layouts to evoke the sophistication of the wine world. At the same time, the interactive and playful components—like drag-and-drop games, sliders, and clickable maps—were designed to make the content feel approachable and fun. By transforming what can feel like an exclusive or intimidating subject into an engaging and entertaining experience, the course invites learners to explore and enjoy the material without feeling out of place.

Throughout the development process, I conducted iterative testing to refine both the content and user experience. Feedback from peers and testers ensured the course was accessible, visually appealing, and user-friendly across devices, delivering a polished and enjoyable  experience for learners of all experience levels.
