The Village of Preskitt 175th Anniversary Celebration: Volunteer Fireworks Safety Training

A small town was hosting a huge celebration, but realized that its fireworks spectacular came with serious risk. I designed an interactive volunteer training course to ensure that the show was as safe as it was dazzling.

Project Information

Audience: Festival volunteers with varying levels of experience in event management and fireworks safety.

Responsibilities: Instructional Design, eLearning Development, Visual Design, Storyboarding, Content Writing, Vyond Video Production

The Challenge

A small town preparing for its 175th-anniversary festival planned an elaborate fireworks display but needed to ensure volunteer safety. Many of the volunteers had little to no experience handling fireworks or managing crowd control, posing significant risks to both the volunteers and attendees.

The Solution

I developed an interactive eLearning course that provided comprehensive volunteer training for the fireworks festival. The course featured engaging scenarios and gamified learning experiences to train volunteers on safety protocols, crowd management, and effective communication during the event. To bring the training to life, I used Vyond to create animated videos that presented real-world scenarios volunteers might face. These animations made the content relatable and accessible while ensuring volunteers were well-prepared for their roles.

Development

I developed an interactive eLearning course that provided comprehensive volunteer training for the fireworks festival. The course featured engaging scenarios and clear guidance on safety protocols, crowd management, and effective communication during the event, and was designed to prepare volunteers for an in-person, hands-on volunteer training with the Preskitt Fire Department.

To bring the training to life, I used Vyond to create animated videos that presented real-world scenarios volunteers might face, as well as engaging interactive activities, such as a gamified experience to identify appropriate PPE and an interactive map of the event location. These features made the content relatable and accessible, while ensuring volunteers were well-prepared for their roles.

Outcomes

This project was a featured submission in The eLearning Designer’s Academy’s July 2024 eLearning Challenge, where it was celebrated for user-friendly features like tooltips for key terms and an auto-updating progress bar, as well as its beautiful design and interactive experiences.
